Even if you exercise regularly if you lead a sedentary lifestyle you are at risk of harming yourself.

Sitting is a default posture for every human being. When you work, socialize, study, travel, or even watch TV, you often do so in a seated position.  It is worse when your job is not such that you have to leave the desk/office environment frequently. The average office worker spends 6-7 hours out of a typical 10-hour work day in a seated position.

Here’s what sitting for long periods does to your health:

  • The more sedentary you are, the more you are likely to die early
  • You are at risk of getting chronic diseases and conditions like unhealthy blood-sugar levels and type-2 diabetes or heart diseases.
  • The more you sit the fatter you get

What to do?

Even if you do 30 minutes to 1-hour active exercise a day, that won’t be of any health benefit if you sit more during the day. However, this doesn’t mean you should never sit down and relax, try to minimize the time you spend sitting during the workday.

If you have a job or lifestyle where you have to sit for prolonged periods of time, don’t just sit there. Take a movement break every half hour. Stand, take a walk, stretch. Instead of using the elevator all the time, take the stairs.

Since this routine will be new to you, give yourself little reminders on your phone or computer that will push you to get out of your seat every 30 minutes.
